Shortboards

Our immense range of shortboards can cater from a beginner right through to a professional surfer. Most short boards have lower volume and width allowing for a broader range of movement on waves as well as the control required for reef and heavy surf breaks. Our general types of shortboards include paddle based surfboards for easier wave catching and pure performance Shortboards for those paddle fit and wanting to dance all over the wave face.

  • With the Modern Highline we examined what novice-to-intermediate surfers need in a surfboard to help them get as much actual surfing experience as possible. To become a better surfer, catching waves and increasing your confidence is the key, so we designed this board to be very buoyant (easy to paddle), stable (easy to get to your feet), and easy to control (smooth turns & go where you want on a wave). Essentially, we built this board to re-define the first steps in surfing so people develop their skills quicker and maximise the enjoyment they get from riding waves.

OUTLINE: The outline is the key to the Highline’s amazing stability. We basically took the middle section of a longboard, then tapered the nose to a semi-point and added a nice curved square tail, and by reducing the overall board length you maintain easier side-to-side turning.

ROCKER: Considered flat, the low rocker means this board paddles very quickly onto waves, and will maintain its speed once you’re up and riding. In this case flat equals flow, and less effort required from the rider to get the board up and going.

CONTOURS: Forward concave helps channel water efficiently across the flatter rocker, particularly when paddling and taking off. The back half of the board has a raised vee with double concave to offset the width, and allow for easier transitions from one rail to the other when performing turns.

FOIL: There’s lots of volume along the full length of the foil, but enough taper through the nose to avoid that ‘boat-like’ feel. The rails are full, but still soft which makes them forgiving as you glide across the face and connect your turns together.

PERFORMANCE: This model can be ridden shorter due to the extra width and higher volumes, which is a big advantage for beginner and intermediate surfers developing their turning skills. For better surfers, gear down into cruise mode before riding the Highline. It has a large sweet spot and offers a very fluid ride, especially in smaller, soft running beach and point waves.

The X1 construction offers the strength, flex and performance advantages of epoxy at a very affordable price.

    Technology:

    Technology X1 Epoxy Construction

X-1 Epoxy is a simple and effective construction using epoxy resin, woven fiberglass and a lightweight EPS core. The EPS core is cut directly from the shapers files, and once custom shaped, is glassed in the traditional hand layup method with multiple layers of woven fiberglass imported form the USA.

This versatile construction is lightweight, affordable, and is particularly suited to manufacturing SUP's. X-1 Epoxy boards are most popular for their subtle flex and memory recall properties, which translates into a board that feels light and responsive, and offers reliable performance regardless of the conditions.

  • “The BEAN transfers the performance features of a standard shortboard into a more compact design that’s incredibly fast and responsive in small-to-medium size waves. A generous nose template distributes extra volume into the front half of the board, while added width through the centre creates a platform for immediate drive and start-up acceleration.

Low entry rocker further enhances speed; this is offset by moderate rocker through the tail which helps to maintain manoeuvrability in steeper waves. The BEAN retains the thickness, rail volume and foil of a performance shortboard and combines a shallow single-to-double concave with vee running out through the tail. The result is a board that’s frisk, lively and a ton of fun.

Ride the BEAN 3-to-6 inches shorter than your regular shortboard. The versatility of the BEAN is further enhanced with a tri-quad fin configuration allowing it to be set up as a thruster or a quad”

  • “The Magic Mushroom is a shorter, wider version of a standard shortboard that allows you shorten the arc of your turn, surf tight in the pocket, and generate exceptional speed.

Extra width positioned through the center of the board compensates for the reduction in length, while the rocker profile and bottom contours mimic that of a high performance shortboard. The hip positioned just forward of the fins reduces the tail width to maintain the rail-to-rail sensitivity and response of a much narrower board.

The smaller sizes will have advanced riders exploring above the lip, the bigger sizes will suit heavier riders who want to surf to their full potential. Surf the Mushy approximately 4 inches shorter than your standard shortboard.”

This is a true one board quiver. Up front you have a ‘fish’ like nose – wide through the 12” mark with an easy entry rocker and single concave. From the mid point back, the template narrows in a long curve into a rounded pin tail with a little more rocker under the back foot and a double concave to vee behind the fins.

This combination makes a board that paddles well and catches waves like a fish but also performs in more critical waves. Under your front foot the board is fast and accelerates quickly, with speed to burn. As you transfer your weight to your back foot the combination of the round pin and double concave makes the board sharp and responsive, easily capable of holding a high line in the barrel or deep gouging carves.

With 5 Futures fin boxes, the Hybrid can be ridden as Quad or Thruster.

  • “The volume in the Jalapeño is distributed to encourage paddle power yet stay agile off the tail with a refined rounded pin.

Designed as a versatile all round performance model the Jalapeño has a single to double concave with a slight vee in the tail allowing for speed control and release during high speed rail turns. The Jalapeño is a great option for the one board surfer looking for a model that can be surfed in just about any conditions from 2 to 3 feet beach breaks to over head hollow waves. The extra width through the nose and slightly reduced entry rocker makes the Jalapeño easy to paddle and fast from the take off. The versatile 5 fin setup adds to its diversity and allows surfing in hollow, barreling waves.”

  • The new Superfish 4 (SF4) is an amalgamation of the Superfish 3 shape, with some old design features from the past. While still targeted at surfer’s looking for a high volume modern fish shape, we believe this is our best Superfish yet; offering the perfect balance of stability and turning response.

OUTLINE: Wider nose, fuller outline up front, and parallel rails create a large stable platform through to middle to generate speed. We’ve eliminated the flyer making a smoother curve in the back half of the board. The tail outline tapers so you can make tighter radius turns when you position your back foot right on the tail. The swallow tail also adds bite especially in smoother conditions/

DESIGN: The return of the original step deck! This feature increases volume through the spine and out towards the rails, creates a flatter deck, while allowing for a lower, more sensitive feeling rail. Single-to-double concave delivers a very consistent and predictable feel, without restricting speed or the ability to transition quickly from rail-to-rail between turns.

ROCKER: The 3 stage rocker is well balanced, with just enough flip in the entry to prevent nose-diving in steeper waves. The flatter mid section maintains forward drive and flow. Moderate curve out the tail presents the opportunity to really jam a nice turn when pushing harder off your back foot.

FOIL: We’ve added volume to this model, under the chest and extending towards the nose and tail. This provides amazing paddle power so you can get into waves early.

PERFORMANCE: Renowned for its wave catching prowess, this model really does appeal to a wide demographic. It’s the perfect board if you’ve just started turning and you want to progress to the next level of performance. Or maybe you’re getting a little older, you’re struggling on a smaller board, and you want to keep turning. From knee high, to well overhead, the SF4 will keep you coming back for more.

    Technical Specifications:

    Technology

    Innegra Matrix

Created in collaboration with Colan Australia, Innegra Matrix (IM) is an exciting new material that’s exclusive to GSI and the 7S board range. IM consists of 3oz bi-axial fiberglass orientated at +/- 45 degrees, an Innegra cross-net woven through the fiberglass, plus 13 unidirectional carbon strands, all of which forms a single layer of fabric that's laminated on the bottom of the board. The deck lay-up has a quad-axial configuration of fiberglass at +/- 45 degrees & standard 4oz fiberglass at 0/90 degrees. With this build, we also use a high density EPS core tha’s cut and finish shaped, and a special ultra bright epoxy resin. Overall this construction helps to control the boards torsional flex (twisting), while the carbon strands control the longitudinal flex. As a result, we still achieve that ‘pop’ and ‘lively’ feel from the EPS core, but with an underlying feeling of control and dampening that’s closer to a traditional PU board. Less chatter, more dampening = smoother through turns.

  • The Tomahawk Missile is a hybrid shortboard.

I have added width through the middle and maintained the rocker profile of a high performance board!

This board can be ridden at the same size as the surfers height. The bottom has a slight single concave under the front foot blending into a double around the front fins offering drive from the front foot and continued acceleration when transferring your weight to the back foot during turns.

A subtle hip in front of the front fins decreases the surface area of the tail and allows fast direction changes. This is a user-friendly contemporary high performance surfboard for waist to over head conditions and is available in a wide range of sizes!??

  • Designed by Luke Short, the Chubby Chedda is a refined version of the original Chubby Checker, a favourite of many including Julian Wilson when he’s free surfing or pushing it in expression sessions.

Luke widened the outline slightly while adding a subtle hip behind the front fins, adding more whip through turns. The concaves are also deeper, creating more ‘get up and go’, and the tail rocker has been accentuated for the perfect blend of speed and responsiveness.

The Chubby Chedda is best described as a ‘performance-hybrid’, and should be ridden at least two inches shorter than your standard high performance short board. And if push comes to shove, the design will hold its own in overhead surf as well.
