Shortboards

Our immense range of shortboards can cater from a beginner right through to a professional surfer. Most short boards have lower volume and width allowing for a broader range of movement on waves as well as the control required for reef and heavy surf breaks. Our general types of shortboards include paddle based surfboards for easier wave catching and pure performance Shortboards for those paddle fit and wanting to dance all over the wave face.

  • With the Modern Highline we examined what novice-to-intermediate surfers need in a surfboard to help them get as much actual surfing experience as possible. To become a better surfer, catching waves and increasing your confidence is the key, so we designed this board to be very buoyant (easy to paddle), stable (easy to get to your feet), and easy to control (smooth turns & go where you want on a wave). Essentially, we built this board to re-define the first steps in surfing so people develop their skills quicker and maximise the enjoyment they get from riding waves.

OUTLINE: The outline is the key to the Highline’s amazing stability. We basically took the middle section of a longboard, then tapered the nose to a semi-point and added a nice curved square tail, and by reducing the overall board length you maintain easier side-to-side turning.

ROCKER: Considered flat, the low rocker means this board paddles very quickly onto waves, and will maintain its speed once you’re up and riding. In this case flat equals flow, and less effort required from the rider to get the board up and going.

CONTOURS: Forward concave helps channel water efficiently across the flatter rocker, particularly when paddling and taking off. The back half of the board has a raised vee with double concave to offset the width, and allow for easier transitions from one rail to the other when performing turns.

FOIL: There’s lots of volume along the full length of the foil, but enough taper through the nose to avoid that ‘boat-like’ feel. The rails are full, but still soft which makes them forgiving as you glide across the face and connect your turns together.

PERFORMANCE: This model can be ridden shorter due to the extra width and higher volumes, which is a big advantage for beginner and intermediate surfers developing their turning skills. For better surfers, gear down into cruise mode before riding the Highline. It has a large sweet spot and offers a very fluid ride, especially in smaller, soft running beach and point waves.

  • A sled for any waves up to 4ft. Whether you are a Longboarder looking for a step down or a shortboarder looking for some extra volume for the smallest days, this board will make you stoked for even the weakest surf.

The shape is short and wide providing loads of planing area and with around 30% more volume than the Thruster, loads of float too. The rocker is flat for maximum speed and the foil carries out to the rail so you can power through turns without bogging the rail.

With 5 Futures fin boxes, the Summer 5 can be ridden as Quad or Thruster.

  • This is a true one board quiver. Up front you have a ‘fish’ like nose – wide through the 12” mark with an easy entry rocker and single concave. From the mid point back, the template narrows in a long curve into a rounded pin tail with a little more rocker under the back foot and a double concave to vee behind the fins.

This combination makes a board that paddles well and catches waves like a fish but also performs in more critical waves. Under your front foot the board is fast and accelerates quickly, with speed to burn. As you transfer your weight to your back foot the combination of the round pin and double concave makes the board sharp and responsive, easily capable of holding a high line in the barrel or deep gouging carves.

With 5 Futures fin boxes, the Hybrid can be ridden as Quad or Thruster.

  • In 2000 the original Pod rapidly became a global favorite, allowing surfers to drop six inches off their shortboards and revolutionize punting.

The Torq Pod Mod design is a heavily modified Pod, designed to be ridden even shorter and wider than the original, catering to the surfer that wants a little more volume forward to catch waves but doesn’t want to sacrifice performance. The tail has been widened for small wave glide, and the original single to double concave has been replaced with a flat entry to concave vee for quick rail to rail transitions.

Experienced surfers ride this board 3”- 6” shorter than you are tall.

  • The new Superfish 4 (SF4) is an amalgamation of the Superfish 3 shape, with some old design features from the past. While still targeted at surfer’s looking for a high volume modern fish shape, we believe this is our best Superfish yet; offering the perfect balance of stability and turning response.

OUTLINE: Wider nose, fuller outline up front, and parallel rails create a large stable platform through to middle to generate speed. We’ve eliminated the flyer making a smoother curve in the back half of the board. The tail outline tapers so you can make tighter radius turns when you position your back foot right on the tail. The swallow tail also adds bite especially in smoother conditions.

DESIGN: The return of the original step deck! This feature increases volume through the spine and out towards the rails, creates a flatter deck, while allowing for a lower, more sensitive feeling rail. Single-to-double concave delivers a very consistent and predictable feel, without restricting speed or the ability to transition quickly from rail-to-rail between turns.

ROCKER: The 3 stage rocker is well balanced, with just enough flip in the entry to prevent nose-diving in steeper waves. The flatter mid section maintains forward drive and flow. Moderate curve out the tail presents the opportunity to really jam a nice turn when pushing harder off your back foot.

FOIL: We’ve added volume to this model, under the chest and extending towards the nose and tail. This provides amazing paddle power so you can get into waves early.

PERFORMANCE: Renowned for its wave catching prowess, this model really does appeal to a wide demographic. It’s the perfect board if you’ve just started turning and you want to progress to the next level of performance. Or maybe you’re getting a little older, you’re struggling on a smaller board, and you want to keep turning. From knee high, to well overhead, the SF4 will keep you coming back for more.

    Technical Specifications:

Created in collaboration with Colan Australia, Innegra Matrix (IM) is an exciting new material that’s exclusive to GSI and the 7S board range. IM consists of 3oz bi-axial fiberglass orientated at +/- 45 degrees, an Innegra cross-net woven through the fiberglass, plus 13 unidirectional carbon strands, all of which forms a single layer of fabric that’s laminated on the bottom of the board. The deck lay-up has a quad-axial configuration of fiberglass at +/- 45 degrees & standard 4oz fiberglass at 0/90 degrees. With this build, we also use a high density EPS core tha’s cut and finish shaped, and a special ultra bright epoxy resin. Overall this construction helps to control the boards torsional flex (twisting), while the carbon strands control the longitudinal flex. As a result, we still achieve that ‘pop’ and ‘lively’ feel from the EPS core, but with an underlying feeling of control and dampening that’s closer to a traditional PU board. Less chatter, more dampening = smoother through turns.

  • ALOHA

“The Black dot is a super versatile small wave performance board. It is fast, easy to surf, paddles well and can be ridden with a performance approach in a huge range of conditions.

It has a single through to double concave with a whisker of vee of the rear fin, making it fast off the mark and loose in the pocket and can be pushed hard off the corners of the swallowtail through turns. The relaxed entry rocker aids in paddling and drive with the more generous tail rocker allowing fast, sharp turns and carves.

The outline and foam distribution is balanced and gives the appearance of a performance swallow tail shortboard that has been compressed,  widened and flattened slightly. Ride one at your normal volume, or a tiny bit over and feel the benefits to your surfing this little gem provides.”

  • “Short, wide, fast and fun the Aloha Black Bean has a short rail line that fits perfectly into the smallest pocket. The small curvy outline helps in the weakest of beach breaks by decreasing drag and increasing speed which is the key to this little pocket rocket. The medium to low rail helps to draw out turns and control speed which the Black Bean has in spades!

The flat entry rocker enables instant acceleration when combined with a single to double concave allowing full control at speed, the subtle diamond tail provides multiple pivot points for turning in the most critical sections of dumpy little shore breaks. For experienced surfers ride this little whip 1 or 2 litres in volume above your standard short board or for the intermediate surfers go up 6 to 8 litres and take full advantage of the paddle power and stability.

  • Aloha X Lopez New Fish XE- Clear

"I love this design. The new fish helped me solve a major hangup I was having with original fish designs- the swallowtails.

I only like a swallow tail if it is built as a quad for fast pointbreaks or with a tiny swallow on a twin with a trailer for mushy beachbreaks . Neither of those are tbest suites for today’s surfing, or geared geared towards how I like to ride and shape surfboards. My goal when shaping is to make the experience as fun and easy as possible. Allowing you to surf better and more."

This new fish with a clean curve through the tail and pulled in squash is best surfed with your normal thruster setup. If you want to ride fast and free in small surf, go a size smaller with the fins. Want to challenge yourself to take off steep and deep in super sucked out hollow tubes, go a size larger and hold on. This board flies. For top speed and quickness. There’s nothing faster on the water than the New Fish.

"The Aloha H2, like all the designs I’m working with, was created through building surfboards for my friends to have more fun on" - Shea Lopez

The H2 is an original concept dreamt up to skate across flat sections with a low rocker and fuller outline upfront that creates speed quickly and efficiently. While the back end of the H2 pulls in nicely with moderate tail rocker and a rounded squash. Similar in design to a small wave shortbaord.

This tail allows for freedom of movement in steep sections with all that speed you’ve generated. The H2 is like that classic skateboard with soft wheels that rides smooth and does what you ask of it when you need it most.

  • “The Rocket9 is suited to your average waves like we find around California. It works great in beach breaks because it can be skatey when you want to generate that speed, but then you step back on that tail and you can absolutely hammer some vert wall. I also think that with the shorter nature of it, it fits really well in the tighter transitions of beach breaks. I have ridden it on big open walls of some point breaks in Morocco and it went well too, kind of like a little scalpel or snowboard, but I think the optimal range for this board would be 2 to 6 foot beach breaks.

The Rocket9 outline has the wide point forward a bit and the tail is pulled in making it super snappy and maneuverable. The swallow gives a great fast release as well. One of the major desires for this board was I wanted was to go fast and then turn hard when I wanted in waves ranging from super average California beach breaks all the way to grinding little tubes. It’s one of the most versatile boards I have ever ridden.

I like to ride my Rocket9 two inches shorter than my normal shortboard length. With the wider outline up front its able to hide a bit of volume under the chest to make the paddling still super easy even though you are on a shorter board. “ – Dane Gudauskas

has about half of its fibres aligned along the length of the cloth (0 degrees) and about half across the cloth (90 degrees) lending itself as a perfect option for creating a controlled flex pattern.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam is a version of polystyrene foam typically found in the core of Firewire surfboards. EPS is typically the lightest of the three foams used in surfboard construction resulting in a much lighter board translating to increased buoyancy and floatation. Basically the lowest density or lightest board will float you the best! The advantage of better buoyancy is added paddling speed and increased manoeuvrability allowing you to ride a smaller board. EPS foam core is also less likely to deteriorate over time!

Epoxy Resin is a healthier alternative to polyester as epoxy emits 50-75% fewer VOCs (volatile organic compounds) than polyester resin, which means a decrease in harmful chemicals in the shop and the environment in general. In fact, epoxy is a common household item, safe to use without a mask and with only moderate ventilation. Epoxy is lighter than polyester. Under most circumstances, resin makes up a large part of a completed board’s overall weight. Not only is epoxy lighter than polyester, but less is needed per coat. This ends up meaning a lighter surfboard – a big plus for most surfers. The biggest bonus However is the durability and strength of epoxy resin.

All XF boards are constructed using a 36gram EPS core with a high-grade timber stringer, each board is hand laminated using epoxy resign and biaxial fibreglass on the deck providing a lighterstronger board that feels fast and responsive under your feet increasing performance in a wide variety of conditions!

“This design is the first Nugget I shaped in 1994.

Proven to be a very versatile performer in a wide range of wave conditions from 1′ ~ 8′ all around the surfing world; thicker wider and shorter with more volume and buoyancy than you have had before, easy to paddle and catch waves, easy to control, with more speed than you have had in years! When it starts to barrel, you will be laughing.”

Flax fibre cloth is an engineered reinforcement fabric made from the bast of the flax seed plant. While flax fibre is one of the oldest cultivated fibres for textiles, it is only recently that its use as a fibreglass substitute has been acheived. Incorporating flax fibre cloth in the lamination reduces the use of regular glass by 1/3rd and adds a great earthy look and more importantly helps lower our carbon footprint.

SR GreenPoxy 56 is an epoxy resin which has up to 56% of its molecular structure coming from plant origin. This percentage is function of the carbon origin contained in the epoxy molecule. The final rate of the mix bio-based carbon content will depend on the hardener choice.

The manufacture of EPS foam does not involve the use of toxic isocyantes used in the production of regular surfboard blanks. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam is light weight and has fantastic shock absorbing properties, making it ideal for surfboards. EPS foam has more buoyancy and flotation increasing paddling speed and maneuverability.

The Surfboard Agency has teamed up with the first, independent 3rd party consumer-facing “eco-label” for boards, the ECOBOARD Project is focused on reducing carbon footprints, increasing the use (and reuse) of renewable, recycled and up-cycled inputs, and reducing toxicity within the surfboard manufacturing process.
